Christmas trading hours have now been confirmed, as amendments have been made to shop trading hours legislation.
The Shop Trading Hours (Extension of Hours) Amendment Act 2022 has not only given shops across Adelaide the option to open at 9am on Sundays from the 6 November, the change has also locked in Boxing Day trading across Adelaide (including suburban shopping centres) from 9am to 5pm and allows shops to trade until midnight on Black Friday every year.
Three additional midnights have been granted going forward in the period between 11 December and 23 December. In 2022 these additional dates will be Thursday 15, Thursday 22 and Friday 23 December.
Due to Christmas Day and New Year’s Day falling on a Sunday this season, additional public holidays have been created on Tuesday 27 December and Monday 2 January allowing all shops (including suburban shopping centres) to open from 9am to 5pm.
Rundle Mall retains exclusivity on New Year’s Day where stores can open from 11am to 5pm.
While we encourage retailers to take part in extended trading hours and capitalise on increased foot traffic over the Christmas period, businesses can still choose to operate under their normal trading hours if they wish to do so. No employee can be required by the employer to work during these extended hours and the hours must be by agreement with the employee.
